Samenvatting:
Karel Appel burst onto the European art scene in 1949 in anexhibition titled Cobra at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. His work had then and has now a daring and vitality that keep it constantly fresh and appealing. Appel was a founder of the Cobra movement - so named because it brought together a group of revolutionary postwar artists from Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam. He has consistently held to a basic idea of the movement - "Painters write, writers paint" - and appearing here for the first time in English translation is a lively autobiographical sketch made up of his poems and journal entries. An extensive interview with the artist by the well-known European art critic Frédéric de Towarnicki is published in full.
