This association had been founded on 15 August 1848 ‘dans le but de soutenir et d'encourager par tous les moyens en son pouvoir le progrès de l'Art musical, et d'assurer aux Artistes Musiciens leur avenir et leur dignité de leur profession’ (with the aim of supporting and encouraging by every means in its power the progress of the Art of Music, and of ensuring to Musical Artists their future and the dignity of their profession) (Le Messager de Gand et des Pays-Bas, 13 March 1849).
