Samenvatting:
Can a work of art be a 'witness' to the reality of Auschwitz? The discomfort that the mere formulation of this question triggers, the philosophical and aesthetic problems that any artistic confrontation with Auschwitz raises, are the starting point of this study. Since it is still important to prevent this dark period of German history from being forgotten, such a question also requires a renewed reflection on the possibilities of art. By analysing Th.W. Adorno's philosophical aesthetics and Luigi Nono's Auschwitz compositions, the thesis is developed that works of art can preserve and bear witness to the memory of Auschwitz in a special way. They are capable of bringing to light what cannot be conveyed in any other way. If it is the case, as Paul Celan put it, that no one bears witness for the witness, then in future it may only be works of art that bear witness to and preserve the reality of Auschwitz.
