Samenvatting:
With manuscript SA 4450 from the music archive of the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin, which was rediscovered in Kiev in 1999 and returned to Berlin in 2001, one of the most important sources on the work of Johann Jacob Froberger (1616-1667) has recently become available to music practitioners and researchers. This magnificent manuscript, presumably made between 1665 and 1670 by the Hamburg organist Johann Kortkamp from autographs, contains a total of 21 authentic compositions by Froberger (six toccatas, thirteen suites and two lamenti). For the majority of the works, the publication offers reliable versions of the music for the first time; in addition, it contains headings, explanations and dedications that have only been handed down here, providing valuable material on Froberger's biography. It is particularly significant that two programmatic compositions by Froberger, previously known only through a brief mention by Johann Mattheson, can now be clearly identified: the "Allemande faite en passant le Rhin" with a detailed description of the musically depicted events and the "Plaincte faite â Londres pour passer la Melancolie" with a revealing autobiographical note about a journey by the composer to England. The manuscript reproduces a weighty musical monument of significance for scholarship and practice, which is made accessible to a wider circle of interested parties through this representative facsimile edition. The supplementation of the facsimile with a transcription into modern musical notation makes the edition indispensable for practitioners as well.
