The Deutsche Musikgeschichtliche Archiv (DMgA) was set up in 1954 in Kassel by the “Musikgeschichtliche Kommission”, an association founded the preceding year. The commission’s task is to publish musical sources and make them available to the public. In the DMgA, microfilms and microfiches on German music history are collected from all over the world. Today the collection includes more than 33,000 sources from over 500 libraries and archives. The documents stem from the late 15th century to the early 19th century. There is also a collection of historic photographs of composers from the second half of the 19th century. Where there are institutes which have been set up to research certain composers such as Bach or Mozart, documents for these composers have not been collected for the DMgA. The archive is supported financially by the state of Hesse and Kassel. It is open to both researchers and members of the general public. Since mid-2009 the archive is located at Bärenreiter. - Permalink:
