The Göttingische Gelehrten Anzeigen is considered as the oldest scholarly journal still published in the German-speaking world. In this specialised journal, scholars critically review contemporary scientific works. The first volume was published in 1739 under the title Göttingische Zeitung(en) von gelehrten Sachen, from 1747 under the direction of the physician Albrecht von Haller. From 1753, the journal was published by the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities, which was founded in 1751, and was called Göttingische Anzeigen von gelehrten Sachen until 1801. The current title was introduced in 1802; since then the journal has been published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, with the exception of the years 1896 to 1935, when it was published by the Berlin publishing house Weidmann. There were only interruptions between 1944 and 1953, as well as in 1960 and 1961.
