A book on the ‘usage’ of emotions by the French Augustinian preacher, Jean-François Senault. He approached the subject of the ‘passions’ from a variety of angles: their uses and dangers, how to moderate them and how a prince should use them. The treatise was often reprinted in different formats and translated into English, German, Italian and Spanish. The work is divided into two parts, the first of which deals with the passions in general and the last with each in particular.
Of the nature of passions -- Of the disorder of passions -- Of the government of passions -- Of the commerce of passions with vertue and vice -- Of the power that passions have upon the will of man -- Of love and hatred -- Of desire and eschewing -- Of hope and despair -- Of audacity and fear -- Of choler or anger -- Of delight and sorrow.
