Engraved frontispiece; title page in red and black ink, with editor's emblem depicting sunbeams & cultivated land with the Latin motto "Illo splendente levabor" ("By His splendor I will be exalted"; intended to testify to the godliness of the institution) and the initials WH (referring to Weisenhaus Halle - La Maison des Orphelins à Halle). The sower in the foreground was interpreted by Bible-loving contemporaries as a reference to the Gospel of Mark (4:14): "The sower sows the word." And this was precisely Francke's basic concern: to change the world by means of the word.
Choffin was a scholar and philologist, born in Héricourt (F) on October 2, 1703, died in Halle (D) in January 1773. He obtained the double position of professor of modern languages at the school of the Orphans and at the university of Halle, and he contributed by his writings and his lessons to spread the use of French in Saxony.
