Johann Arndt was a Lutheran theologian and forerunner of Pietism who published influential books on devotion
Pia Desideria, the manifesto of Lutheran Pietism by Phillipp Jakob Spener, first appeared in 1675 as a preface to this new edition of Arndt's Postilla.
Contains an elaborate frontispiece engraving, a portrait of the author, as well as 46 beautiful and quite 'theatrical' illustrations throughout the book. Some of them are signed by Conrad Meyer (1618-1689) a Swiss painter, engraver, and medallist, who designed and engraved them whilst being a member of his teacher's workshop Matthäus Merian the Elder (1593-1650) in Frankfurt.
