Ferdinand was the son of Guillaume Staes, organist at the Brussels royal chapel. From 1758, Ferdinand Staes had lessons from his father and later from Ignaz Vitzthumb. He worked as harpsichordist at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. In 1767, he was appointed assistant to his father (second organist at the royal chapel). In 1772, Ferdinand Staes became organist at the Madeleine church in Brussels.
