very rare dutch songbook. For the music to his poems Starter made use of old english tunes.
Starter (Jan Jansz.), a poet from Friesland who flourished in the first half of the seventeenth century, published several works of poetry, but mostly of frolicsome and lascivious content; some stage work by him is also available. He died young in battle. As he had to deal with ecclesiastical opposition, his plays were banned. Also his publishing company went down. In 1625 he became the historian of Count Ernst van Mansfelt. He also took on the task of 'courantier', which meant collecting war news and passing it on. It is in this war, the Thirty Years' War, that he dies while marching in Mansfelt's campaign in Hungary. Many of his poems became the subject of other artworks such as plays or paintings. He is best known for his poem about the "Mennonite Sister".
Contains 10 charming & beautiful engravings by Jan van de Velde II (ca. 1593-1641), interesting both for the costumes and manners of the period: Frontispiece is depicting the city of Leeuwarden as a joyful pleasure garden (Fountain with Frisian virgin: a fountain in the middle of a square that represents the Frisian virgin. She holds the weapon of Friesland in her hand. Amor is on her lap, his arm around her neck. Around the fountain elegant couples that dance, hiking, ministo, making music, etc. On a Banderolder ceased by Putti is listed the title of the book), and introduction is illustrated with engraving portraying Starter as poet of the lyric of love: The swans symbolize himself and pull Cupido away from 'The Isle of Dogs' (England). - Permalink:
