Theoretical dictionary of the three fine arts of painting, sculpture and architecture as well as of poetry and music.
Title-page engraving by Daniel Chodowiecki (1726-1801), German-Polish painter and printmaker. Allegory of the fine arts: the picture shows a light female figure surrounded by Minerva and the Graces. Minerva sits with lance and medusa shield. At her feet are tools for carving stone, a palette, brush, compass and square, masks and cothurn, a shawm and a plectrum. Minerva looks up at the female figure standing next to her, her gaze directed into the distance as if listening to an inner voice. A bright sun shines above the standing one. Minerva points with her hand to the instruments on the floor which refer to the three fine arts of painting, sculpture and architecture as well as to poetry and music.the three graces, meanwhile, are busy endowing the standing female figure with attributes that point to various arts. In the background, a landscape opens up in the depths, in which a naked, still uncivilised human family sits in front of a kind of primitive hut while one of them chases a deer.
