Protestantism in Strasbourg is an important aspect of the history and sociology of the city. The Protestant Reformation was introduced in Strasbourg as early as 1518, when Matthieu Zell preached in Strasbourg in the Lutheran manner. In 1520, Pierre-Philippe de Remiremont preached the Reformation in the church of Saint-Pierre-le-Vieux in Strasbourg. In 1524, the pastor Martin Bucer moved to the church of Sainte-Aurélie in Strasbourg, outside the walls of Old Strasbourg, and then 1531 to the church of Saint Thomas in Strasbourg. In 1529 the cathedral was given over to Protestant worship. The city officially joined Lutheranism in 1532.
