Collected work of Jan Harmenszoon Krul
Krul was a Dutch song poet, playwright, ironmonger and bookseller. His portrait was painted in 1633 by Rembrandt. He founded the Amsterdamsche Musijck Kamer, devoted to the cultivation of music drama. Krul wrote successful pastoral, erotic, love poems and Catholic, religious poetry for bigots. Krul argued for a harmonious combination of music and rhetoric and introduced a different poetic style from Vondel, less sumptuous, rather naive. His language is simple, fluent, direct. Shepherd life is staged in half of his plays.
