Ignaz Blasius Bruder (1780-1845) founded a dynasty of music makers that lasted well into the 20th century. He attended the public school in Zell, learnt the mason's trade and left Zell as an itinerant journeyman around 1797/1798, travelling to Nancy and Mirecourt, where he became acquainted with barrel organ and music box making and learnt this craft. When he returned home with Dom Bédos' magnificent book in his luggage, he set up as a music box maker in Simonswald in the Black Forest in 1804 and continued to develop his craftsmanship on a self-taught basis. He was also involved in the construction of church organs. He worked as a temp, and later as a journeyman, for Mathias Martin in Waldkirch and in 1806 set up his own organ manufactory in Waldkirch. In 1807, he married Maria Anna Siffert, the daughter of a cobbler. This marriage produced 15 children, three daughters and twelve sons. Only five of the sons reached adulthood, but all of them learnt the trade of a music maker, and led the firm towards future generations. - Permalink:
