The orchestral setting was composed in 1785, the arrangements for string quartet and piano followed in time for publication of all three settings in 1787 by Artaria. The setting for chorus and orchestra came a decade later in 1796.
Part of a collection owned by Priscilla Anne Wellesley-Pole (1793-1879) who became Lady Burghersh, later Countess of Westmorland, who was from childhood associated with many of the great figures of the day. In 1811, at the age of eighteen, she married John Fane (=Lord Burghersh) one of the future Duke of Wellington's A. D. C.'s, and later 11th Earl of Westmorland and founder of the Royal Academy of Music in 1822. He was a great music lover who devoted most of his leisure hours to the study of music, was a good violinist and a prolific composer. - Permalink:
