'Alle de werken' consists for the most part of court poems, a genre popular in the Netherlands until the end of the eighteenth century, from which people could learn how to live simply and virtuously outside the city. The play 'Aspasia' was performed in Amsterdam in 1655 and even in Stockholm in 1667, where a Dutch Comedy was opened that year; at that time, Dutch was understood quite well in Swedish higher circles.
The work is profusely illustrated with the famous engravings of Swelinc, Hondius, Matham et al, mostly after Adriaan v.d. Venne: In volume one, an engraved title, full-page portrait of Cats by Natalis and 281 in-text engravings, some nearly full-page (on title pages of individual volumes), including "Child's Play", "Galathea", etc. . In volume two, an engraved title with a portrait of cats, a full-page portrait of Anna Maria Schuurmans, two additional full-page engraved titles (Old Age, Aspasia), three double-page engravings (pages 453, 490 & 526), a full-page engraving, and 145 additional in-text engravings, of various sizes (the last 12 of which, by Jan Goeree, are apparently new to this edition). The two printed title pages in red and black each have a large (repeated) vignette by Goeree - Permalink:
