Title page mentions "Just Published the Fairy Prince by Dr Arne ..." The work premiered at the Covent Garden Theatre, London, on 12 November 1771, which makes 1771 the probable publishing date of Nasci's Sonatas.
In 1770, he was first violin in the orchestra of the Florentine theatre, which was notoriously dedicated to comic operas. The English traveller and scholar Charles Burney, whose testimony constitutes the most important source for Nasci's biography, remembered him in this role. Burney got to know him during his stay in Naples, at the home of the English ambassador William Hamilton, where he was able to hear him perform some of his trios: he gained a very favourable impression of them, judging them 'extremely pretty' and performed 'with a very uncommon degree of grace and facility' (Burney, 1771, p. 345). The publication of a collection of Nasci's music in London in 1771, the Sonate sei di cembalo con l'accompagnamento di violino, published by Welcker and dedicated to Catherine Barlow, Lord Hamilton's first wife, remembered not only by Burney but also by Leopold Mozart as a skilled harpsichordist (Burney, 1771, pp. 321 f.; Mozart. Briefe und Aufzeichnungen, I, Kassel 1962, p. 348). It is possible that the edition was the result of the good offices of Burney himself (manuscript copies of Nasci's sonatas and trios were kept in his library); but it is more likely that it was Lord Hamilton who sponsored it: it is established that the Hamiltons were in London in that year. Burney's testimony and the dedication of the Six Harpsichord Sonatas reveal Nasci's familiarity with one of the most important artistic, musical and social salons in Naples. - Permalink:
