Nota:
The' Nouveau système de musique théorique' is the second treatise on music theory written by Jean-Philippe Rameau. With this work, he completed his 'Traité de l'harmonie réduite à ses principes naturel's of 1722, and presented it as an introduction to the latter. In the meantime, he had become aware of Joseph Sauveur's work on the harmonic resonance of the sound body, which corroborated, in terms of physics and auditory perception, the principles set out in his first book. The perception of harmonics (or consonances) when the fundamental sound is emitted had already been noted by the Jesuit scholar Marin Mersenne.Whereas the entire theoretical approach in the previous treatise was based exclusively on mathematical considerations, in his Nouveau système Rameau refers to the physical phenomenon of harmonic sounds that are, so to speak, 'consubstantial' with the fundamental sound. Their inevitable presence is the basis of Nature and, for the author, justifies the notion of perfect harmony.
