a| Gevaert was a Belgian composer and organist. He is mainly remembered in music history as a music educator and conservatory director and as a musicologist, who published on music in antiquity, church music, orchestration and instrumentation. Like Fétis, he played an important role in the revaluation of early music, from antiquity to the 18th century. In 1907, he was made a baron by King Leopold II of Belgium.
