a| Belle van Zuylen or Belle de Zuylen (full name Isabella Agneta Elisabeth van Tuyll van Serooskerken; from her marriage also Isabelle de Charrière (1740-1805) was a French-speaking writer and composer. She wrote novels, (self-)portraits, fables, poetry, novellas, pamphlets, plays, operas (libretti and music) and also composed songs, minuets and keyboard sonatas. She wrote thousands of letters, of which more than 2600 have been preserved. She took a keen interest in the society and politics of her age, and her work around the time of the French Revolution is regarded as being of particular interest. Her novels are characterised by great psychological depth and describe the difficulties modern, emancipated women like Van Zuylen faced in a conservative world ruled by men.
