a| Scores of complex 20th-century solo piano works may contain barely to unrealizable elements. This issue appears, among others, in the works of K. S. Sorabji (researched works: Opus Clavicembalisticum and Symphonic Nocturne), I. Xenakis (researched work: Evryali), B. Ferneyhough (researched work: Lemma-Icon-Epigram) and M. Finnissy (researched work: Midsummer Morn from English Country-Tunes). A theoretical section dissects what complexity means, how our Western performance practice is structured and music notation came into being. From a music analysis point of view, the question of whether complex scores can be rewritten, when this is desirable and what impact, if any, it has on the final result is explored. Courant music analysis models, such as thematic analysis, series analysis and visual analysis of MIDI graphic representations, lead to a better understanding of the studied works. In an experiment, MIDI analyses are made of the performance of relevant fragments, using original and rewritten versions. This makes it possible to examine, which version has the best outcome as a result. From an artistic point of view, the question is asked to what extent the research results add artistic value. All of the researched works were played in lecture-recitals for this purpose. Of the more than two-hour Symphonic Nocturne by K. S. Sorabji, the world premiere was played. An edition of this work, based on the research results, was published at the Sorabji Archive. (Translated with Deepl.com)
