a| From the beginning of the 17th century, various music societies or ‘Collegia musica’ existed in Zurich. Originally strongly supported by the Latin students and teachers, a lot of sacred music was sung there, but instrumental music was also played. The various societies merged several times, as their ‘family tree’ shows:More and more Zurich music lovers were accepted as new members of the societies, where they had the opportunity to listen to music performed by larger ensembles. From the 18th century at the latest, they were supported by music-loving members of the city's most prestigious families. The societies repeatedly tried to attract professional musicians as members.
