a| Vilbac entered the Conservatoire de Paris at age thirteen to study the organ with François Benoist and composition with Fromental Halévy. Two years later, in 1844, he won the second Prix de Rome with his cantata 'Le Renégat de Tanger'. Returning to Paris after his stay at the Villa Medici in Rome, Vilbac became the holder of the great organ Merklin-Schütz of the église Saint-Eugène-Sainte-Cécile in 1855. This suite must be composed somewhere between 1859 (creation of 'Faust' at the Théâtre-Lyrique in Paris) and 1869 (important revival of 'Faust' as 'grand opéra' at the Opéra). Its publication dates are offset by the address of Choudens, 30 Boulevard des Capucines.
