a| The quarrel between the Gluckists and the Piccinnists is an aesthetic controversy which divided the Parisian musical world between 1775 and 1779 and which pitted the defenders of French opera (Gluckists) and the supporters of Italian music (Piccinnists). Although the struggle was fierce between the defenders of each side, the two composers, pitted against each other by their supporters, admired each other deeply. Piccinni, discreet and not very combative by nature, was also a stranger to any intrigue, thinking only of the exercise of his art, while Gluck took a more direct part in this war of the pen.
