a| Adolphe van Soust de Borckenfeldt was a Belgian art historian and author, worked for the Ministry of the Interior and directed Belgium's Royal Museum of Paintings and Sculpture. Through his work, he came into contact with a number of artists of his time and became particularly involved with the painter Antoine Wiertz. He became politically involved in the Flemish movement and was therefore interested in a balance of political power in Europe after the Franco-Prussian War. He made this interest one of the themes of his works, which he published under the pen name Paul Jane.
