a| On the occasion of his 85th birthday, Piet Heuwekemeijer published his personal memories in book form. He started his career as a violinist with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, but soon became involved in its management. From 1959 to 1967, he was the orchestra's business director. He then became the business and artistic director of the five broadcasting orchestras and 'het Groot Omroepkoor'. Even after his retirement in 1980, he remained actively involved with the Dutch symphony orchestras, including as an advisor to the government. The author writes eloquently about his numerous managerial activities and the many contacts with great conductors and soloists. He begins his memoirs with the childhood and study years in Amsterdam; he also recounts the time he served as second violinist in the Concertgebouw Orchestra under conductors Willem Mengelberg and Eduard van Beinum. The book is illustrated with many black-and-white photographs and other images.
