a| The most important contemporary source on Johann Michael Haydn's life and work is the Biographical Sketch by Michael Haydn, published two years after his death by the publishing house Mayr'sche Buchhandlung in Salzburg. Published on behalf of his widow and drafted by friends of the composer: Georg Johann Schinn (1768-1833) and Joseph Otter (around 1760-1836) - both his students - as well as Haydn's "most trusted" friend, P. Werigand Rettensteiner (1751-1822) from Michaelbeuern Abbey near Salzburg.
