a| Because of its position, Dunkirk was the object of much envy and periodically belonged to the county of Flanders, the kingdoms of Spain, England and France. On 25 June 1658, it changed nationality three times and became definitively French on 27 October 1662. In English literature of the early 18th century, few political or diplomatic considerations attracted more attention then the proposed demolition of the harbor and fortifications of Dunkirk, which (during the succesive struggles with France) had sheltered a fleet of commerce-raiders and had kept alive the thread of an invasion of England or Scotland.
