a| Jean-François de La Harpe (1739-1803) was a French playwright, writer and literary critic. He took part in the quarrel between the Gluckists and the Piccinists, an aesthetic controversy that divided the Parisian musical world between 1775 and 1779, where the defenders of French opera (Gluckists) and the supporters of Italian music (Piccinists) were opposing each other. La Harpe was, together with Marmontel and d'Alembert, a proponent of Italian music.
