a| He was the son of the teacher and organist at St Stephen's in Bremen Johann Lange ( 1755-1815), had his musical training with Peter Winter in Munich, and returned to Bremen in 1804, initially as his father's assistant, before taking over his father's position as organist at St Stephen's in 1809. Lange played first violin in the orchestra of the Privat-Concerte and performed in concerts (especially at the Sing-Akademie) as a tenor. He was also founding member of the Singschule, the Sing-Akademie (later an honorary member) and, in 1827, of the Liedertafel (temporarily its conductor).
