a| According to Rebecca Herrisone (Manchester U, message to Eline Holl, 21 March 2020): "it is a special copy, which probably indicates some kind of interim stage between the 2nd and 3rd editions of the Compendium. That is, the passage printed in your Appendix is included in the 1678 edition (p. 94, downloadable from EEBO) — placed exactly as Simpson requests in the pre-amble to the Appendix – but not in the 1667 edition proper, so the version you have seems to have the later addition of this material pre-empted. The content of the Appendix is therefore material that is already known from the 1678 edition. However, I wasn’t aware that Simpson had written it earlier to include with copies of the 1667 edition. From the reproduction I assume that the Appendix forms a separate gathering, starting with the Errata list on the recto; we can’t really tell, then, at what point the addition was made: clearly proof-reading had identified the errors listed in the Errata, but this could have been done at any point after printing itself, so could come any time between 1667 and the later addition. However, Simpson’s text at the start of the Appendix clearly indicates that he doesn’t yet know if there will be another edition, and there is therefore some implication that the Appendix is relatively close in date to the 1667 edition itself."
