a| Johannes Duns Scotus (1266-1308), a Franciscan theologian, born in Duns, Scotland, was given the scholastic accolade Doctor Subtilis ("the Subtle Doctor") for his penetrating and subtle manner of thought. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1993.

a| Scotus's great work is his commentary on the Sentences of the scholastic theologian Peter Lombard (1096-1160). Lombard's original text was used as a starting point for highly original discussions on topics of theological or philosophical interest.

a| The Franciscan Antonius de Fantis (1460-1533) was an Italian theologian who is considered one of the most subtle defenders of the doctrine of Scotus in the 16th century. He edited and corrected many of Dun's writings in the 1520s and 30s.
