a| Carlo Gervasoni was an Italian organist, violinist and composer, as well as a harpsichordist, philosopher and music theorist who is best known for this treatise as well as his 'Nuova teoria di musica ricavata dall'odierna pratica' (1812; see 04G21), which helped lay the foundations for sonata form theory.

a| Gervasoni studied every form of song, instrument, and related work available, and found there was not enough written for musicians of the day. This inspired him to write about music in a way that was accessible to anyone. After ten years of hard work he published 'The school of music' in 1800, an important treatise which was, however, harshly criticized by contemporaries for the excessive simplification of some concepts and the practice of contrapuntal composition on new melodies rather than on ancient melodies of the cantus firmus. Gervasoni's treatise of 1800 is particularly important because it defines fundamental guidelines for modulations in the sonata form, defined later only from 1816 by Reicha and subsequently by Carl Czerny.
