The publication initiated the second stage of the Calvinistic Controversy, which then took the form of a dispute about the imputed righteousness of Christ. This dispute lasted until 1768 when the expulsion of six Calvinistic Methodist students from the University of Oxford precipitated the third and final stage of the Controversy.
