a| Handel wrote the Oratorio in 1708 in Rome, where it was first performed in the Palazzo Bonelli of the Marchese Ruspoli on Easter Sunday, 8 April, conducted by Arcangelo Corelli, and repeated the following day. Numerous invoices in the Archivio Segreto Vaticano show that several craftsmen were commissioned to build a stage and decorations, i.e. the work was staged. Approximately 1500 printed libretti prove that, including three public rehearsals, about 300 listeners were present at each performance.
