a| Last novel of Timmermans. Romanticized biography of Adriaen Brouwer, who was born in 1605 in Oudenaarde. This painter and bon vivant had an eventful life, in which his free morals, his adventurous character and his interest in the seamy side of life were central. Timmermans wrote it at the end of WWII (1944) and is brilliant at drawing parallels between the Catholic Spanish occupation in the 17° century and the occupation by Nazi Germany.
