a| The Odes (Latin: Carmina) are a collection in four books of Latin lyric poems by Horace. The Horatian ode format and style has been emulated since by other poets. Books 1 to 3 were published in 23 BC. A fourth book, consisting of 15 poems, was published in 13 BC.

a| Schmidt only transferred the odes and did so in the verse metre of the original manuscript, a task which was no easy task at the time. In spite of these shortcomings, the translation was probably the best of its time, because it came from a real poet; it also contributed in no small measure to winning Horace friends, as the repeated editions prove.
