a| "Rameau's last published book on harmonic theory. Working with the fundamental principles of harmonic theory established in his revolutionary 'Traité de l'Harmonie' (1722), Rameau presented in the 'Code' an alternative explanation for the derivation of the minor third (based on the upper partials of a vibrating body). He also classified the suspension as a type of substitution, and "attempted to relate proportion in music to that in other disciplines, [seeking] to confirm the derivation of music from a universal, cosmic principle founded on nature and on unity" (GDM). This last theoretical flight of fancy, which Rameau had stated before in his 'Observations sur notre instinct pour la musique' (1756), was the major cause of Rameau's break with the Encyclopedists. The controversy is detailed in Rameau's 'Origine des Sciences' and 'Lettre à M. D'Alembert,' both bound in with this copy of the 'Code'."
