a| Almost a century after her death, Swedish artist Anna Cassel (1860-1937) is emerging as an important figure in the history of abstract art. Formerly known as a conventional landscape artist of moderate success, her close artistic and personal relationship with fellow painter Hilma af Klint has been identified as far more significant than previously known. They were both part of the christian spiritualist group The Five between 1897 and 1907 and, much like af Klint, Cassel was also an early practitioner of abstract art based on spiritual experiences. This publication marks the first ever presentation of Anna Cassel's spiritual works in book form and sheds light on the fascinating legacy of painters and mystics active in early twentieth century Sweden.
